Weiling in Town - Part I
18 Mar 2006 – Another exciting event that happened recently was having Weiling in town! Visitors are always always welcome, in fact, we thrive on you people. She was here on a work trip, and me being her cousin (*wink-wink*) had to bring her around of course. And we were more than happy to do so. Finally we can pay-back for all the times we’ve lounged off her, London, Beijing, and just recently Beijing again. And Weiling’s one person I always have fun with; we seem to be pretty much on the same wavelength and she’s always brimming with “wicked” little anecdotes. Swweet!
Speaking of same wavelength, guess what? We ended up getting each other mini books as token gifts.
I got her Max Erhmann’s Desiderata, and for some reason, she ended up getting me, or rather us, Frankfurt’s “On Bullshit”. Hmm… is there supposed to say something about us…
The task at hand though was what to cover in 2 short days?!? And not say we want to be boring, but yes, we ended up with all the usual suspects. In our defence, they ARE Sydney’s landmarks/icons. What would people back home say if they found out she didn’t even pay homage to these places!
And so, firstly a trip to Harry’s de Wheels:
What self-respecting tourist would come to Sydney and not chomp down on one of these dogs? And seeing it was a Saturday, we had to hit at least one market. Paddington for the chic and funky gal.
Oxford St’s great for shopping too! A bit too good perhaps. Somehow William and I always end up buying more than the actual tourist. Including these fabulous wallets from Morrissey:
What?… They were 25% off!
And then there’s these 2 shops on a side-street that have always amused Billie and I. Look closely, it’s a super old-fart barber’s situated right next to a poshy, swanky hair salon complete with black walls and chandelier – each completely indifferent to the other. Talk about stark contrast.
For Weiling’s first real meal, we brought her to Musashi. With only 2 days to spare, there was no room for experimentation. We had to bring her somewhere we KNOW can deliver.
I dare say she’s pretty pleased. On her blog, she says and I quote, “by now I am quite convinced that I would marry Seafood from Australia.” I suspect her Musashi experience would have contributed significantly to that choice decision.
And no, the day’s not quite over. After dinner, we met up with Ana, one of 2 Serb twins that Weiling got to know in BJ. The other’s Ivana, whom I got to meet during my recent trip there. The similarity in their voice and manner of speech is uncanny! And mai-xiao-xiao, they may be from Serbia, but mind you, they speak and write better Mandarin than 3 of me put together! Make that 5.
It was sweet, a nice little reunion for the 2 girls over coconut drinks at Crow’s Nest Gloria Jean’s.
That’s it for the day – hmm… feels a lot longer than just one day doesn’t it? Check back in for more on Weiling’s trip downunder.
