Sheer Luck with Managers
14 July 2005 - Having worked at GNC for almost a year, I thought it’s time to pay tribute to the managers I’ve worked under, ESPECIALLY after working with Alissa yesterday!
Boy is she a tight-ass?!? She’s the manager from the Miranda branch, standing in for Mark as he rests after his colonoscopy ordeal. Effectually she’s only at North Sydney for 4 days, and effectually I only worked with her for 1 hour 15 minutes, boy, were they the longest 1 hour 15 mins I have ever spent at GNC.
From the moment I entered the shop, I sensed something was wrong when she literally pounced on me, until she discovered ‘Oh, I’m not a customer.’ Next I noticed how hard Luke was working at cleaning the shelves… strange?!?… NOBODY cleans that hard around here… and before long, I found out why.
As I started to stock the “Specials” stand how we usually do it, Alissa rudely butted in and started removing all the products. Apparently there’s a “special” way to do it, and They would get really upset if we didn’t do it right. They? Who’s they? I didn’t know we were being watched by the “Specials Stand” police?!? Next, she started to QUIZ me about the specials for the month. WHAT?!? In this whole time that I’ve worked for GNC, I’ve never heard of anyone being quizzed about specials! And now this, within 15 minutes of meeting the woman? (Luke said later he almost laughed out loud when he heard Alissa quizzing me.) Luckily for me, I happen to have a good memory, and could rattle off the right answers. To which she actually ACCUSED me of cheating!?! Like, is this woman serious? Elle est tres tres tres bizarre! I pretended to be insulted, and in my most serious of voice informed her that I didn’t. hee hee, I think it worked, ‘cos after that she backed off. Luke confirmed that if he had to work under her, he would have quit!
Oh man! Usually I only hear about these terror manager stories from poor Amy who had to work with Lenche (she’s the MOTHER who spawned all other terror managers) at the Bankstown branch. I just find these people hilarious and pathetic. There’s loyalty to the company, but when you do it by screwing and annoying all your staff who work for you, that’s just taking it a bit too far. Many important lessons to be learnt here girls and boys. Having had a taste of it myself, I now REALLY appreciate the good luck I’ve had in terms of managers.
Let’s see:
Parramatta
– Emma (who I never did work with @Parra, but did when she got transferred to N. Syd): always fun, energetic and can ah-kah-ji all the way with
Broadway
– John: gay, hilarious and bitches about customers, my kind of guy
– Ubi: gay, kind and never stingey in imparting his naturopathic knowledge; I definitely respect him
– Kate: sweet, sweet Katie! My favourite! genuine, dignified, bubbly, just an absolute sweetheart! she’s for keeps (so sad when she got transferred to Winnie Hills)
North Sydney
– Kate: YAY!!! as per above
– Mark: he’s a classic; goofy, understanding and dishes out fatherly advice
Yup, I’ve had it good and breezy.
