Hiromi’s Birthday!
6 Apr 2007 — The mood has been kinda heavy around here recently, so I thought I’d lighten things up a bit by blogging about Hiromi’s birthday which actually happened couple of weeks back. Cause you know, birthdays always involves food, and food always makes for a happy, lighthearted occasion. On this particular night, we managed to get reservations for yet another restaurant — Vilu! First time for all of us again… yipee!
So before we went over to the other island, we gathered next door in Hiromi’s room. Opening a mystery gift from an anonymous sender — can you tell that the girls were filled with slight trepidation even as they unwrapped the present. Well, these days anything unlabelled is rather suspect, isn’t it? But it’s ok, it turned out to be a harmless little clock.
Moving on to more important things… like getting your mascara done just right. Heather at 18 needed some coaching from us lao zha-bor.
So as mentioned, Vilu is situated on Rangali island, the smaller one, so since we were dressed so prettily, we took the dhoni instead of walking. Oh well, 10 minutes on the dhoni, what to do leh?…
Take pictures of course!
Me too! Me too! Oh by the way, it was only 4 of us tonight. Yukiko had to work late, and Yukari so sad, she went to Male in the day to visit the dentist, and was meant to take the last flight back, but kena bumped off! Somemore she went shopping in the Italian boutique and specially bought a dress for tonight! So sayang…

Ok, ok, what to eat? What to eat? By the way, in the foreground, that’s the bread selection with olive oil, pesto, goat’s cheese and olives.
Heather, and her “嘟嘟嘴” look. Very cute, 9 out of 10 photos, she has this look. And notice the LED egg lamp she’s touching. Very nice hor?
Decisions, decisions, very hard to choose, cause as always, everything looks good.
Ok, finally we made our selection. Now all there is to do is wait.
Speaking of which… more time for photos. Wat… we Asians right?… Well then, it’s part of our birthright. Group shot, group shot!
Couple shot, couple shot. See, the “Heather” look again. Haha, she very farni one… all throughout dinner (and always actually), she will nonchalantly point the camera at herself and click away… The rest of us old girls are used to it by now, and always find it very endearing — sigh… youth. Wish we were there.
Another couple shot — this time it’s Yukie and Hiromi’s turn to act cute.
Ahah! Another distraction before the grub arrives. Bubbly! But of course, a toast to Hiromi’s health!
And which birthday celebration would be complete without a present? The back of this top actually says “Maldives” — Crazy 4 Maldives!
And finally, our starters arrived. Yukie and I both ordered the Hazelnut and Almond soup — see, Matte’s pouring it out from a jug, sexy or wat?!
Heather had the Lobster Risotto — OMG, it was so creamy and rich you could feel your thighs plumping up even as you swallow. But it was worth it!
For my main, I opted for the King Prawn Tempura. Oishi of course! But 3 only… where got enough?!!
Hiromi had Spinach and Pine Nut Ravioli — erm, ok, this was the one thing I wasn’t wild about. I think the wanton skin and pine nuts just don’t go together somehow. I would have gone for the Lobster Ravioli — yep, Lobster Everything! Bring it on!
And after the savoury, the sweet! Yay!!! Birthday cake! Haha, but see how much of an effort it was to light the candles? Yeah, we were outdoors and it was pretty windy with the seabreeze. The waiters really went above and beyond for Hiromi.
Blowing out the candles and making a wish. Isn’t she sweet?
Quick! Cut the cake so we can have some! Chocolate cream, very yummy… surprisingly, I managed to stop at two.
After cake, we took the dhoni back to the main island. It was a cloudless night, and tons, TONS of stars were out. A perfect end to a perfect night.
