Cooking Up a Storm

21 Mar 2006 – So it’s been a while since I last blogged, partly been busy, partly inertia, partly just needed to sort out some stuff before I make anything official. So if anyone has been religiously visiting the site and found nothing new time and time again, sorry. But well, with the few relatively free days ahead, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

So as mentioned previously, for the first few weeks when we were back, in between sending out resumes and waiting for replies, I was very busy satisfying Billie’s appetite, and even doing a bit of entertaining. And lest you accuse me of lying, here are a few pictures as proof.

First there were those wholemeal passionfruit and strawberry muffins – made entirely from scratch ok? No instant muffin mix. I must admit they look a lot prettier than they tasted. A tad too healthy and plain really. But Billie very sah-kar one lah, he said they were very good, like real.

Then there were those buckwheat pancakes with caramalised bananas. Er yah, a bit over-caramalised… but again, Bi gasaked it all down with fervour.

And now that Alvin has moved up to the north, he’s also been a regular at mealtimes, partaking in gastronomic affairs of aglio olio with grilled prawns…

…and free-range scrambled eggs served with tuna and dill on spelt toast

Billie dubbed that event “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Haha, so corny!

Speaking of which, it’s summer in Sydney (or it was) – season of berries!

Fruit salad of strawberries, blueberries and yummilicious currants, a bit like miniature grapes, very juicy and sweet! Not just pretty to look at, they’re chocked full of antioxidants.

And then there was the night I played host to Sumie and Amy, cooking up a South-East Asian storm.

The inspiration for the theme was none other than the trusty Prima brand Mee Siam paste, which resulted in this beauty:

Very authentic, highly recommended.

Other dishes include a chicken with watercress salad with a coconut lime dressing (foreground) and a basil and chilli tofu-vegie stirfry (background).

Not forgetting desserts:

Fresh lychees and longans – quite a rarity in this part of the world, considered very exotic. In fact, Sumie has never had them prior to this. And also a pandan-sweetcorn coconut agar agar.

Amy and Sumie so camera-shy, this was the best we did.

And before I forget, that very same day, Billie finally acquired the toy he’s been dreaming of since leaving ENGIN (the company he previously worked for).

Yup, having been spoilt by the ease of getting a fresh cup of café-style coffee at the touch of a button at ENGIN, he now has his own Saeco coffee machine. It’s called “Magic” as well, how apt.

Keep checking in, I’ll be filling you in on what else we’ve been up to very very shortly. Ciao!
